The Greatest Generation – A Hymn Sing:
The story of the Greatest Generation was a time when citizens were required to put forth tremendous effort at home and around the globe. They needed to work and bond together as never before. Where did they get the strength to do all that needed to be done and to face such difficult times?
For many, the strength came from a belief in a Higher Power. This faith would be necessary to achieve the inner strength necessary for the task that lay ahead.
On Sunday, July 16th at 2 PM, we will be remembering what a worship service would have been like for those in uniform at that time. We will be following a service directly from materials that were issued to members of the Armed Forces of the United States Military branches.
Herb Bomberger (a former chaplain) will be leading us through the service. We will be singing hymns that gave comfort to the members of the military as well as to the folks at home. Most of you will find the words of the service to be very familiar.
The public is encouraged to consider dressing in the style of the 1940s during the Hymn Sing. Maybe Grandad’s old tie, Grandmother’s Sunday hat or dress?…you get the idea. We are also expecting several WWII re-enactors.
There will also be a surprise “special music” song. As can be expected for a summer hymn sing at the Historic Monaghan Church in Dillsburg, there will be ice cream afterwards.
